WASHINGTON D.C. (KMOX) -- U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill took to the Senate floor to speak in support of the proposed spending cap amendment.
"The time has come that we all have to feel the pain of saying no. We all have to be willing to suffer the political consequences of saying no." said McCaskill
She said the bill, that would cap discretionary federal spending until 2014 is not a fix-all but she said "we wont get out of the recession on the back of government spending."
Senator McCaskill also called it "a wonderful bipartisan moment"
"We will not get out of this recession on the back of government spending" said Senator McCaskill "and if we decide that this is just about government spending...we are dealing a very very bad hand to our grandchildren."
The senator went on to say "that pet project at home we know we can get because we can get an earmark...that maybe this is the year to say no. This is the year to push back from the table."\
President Obama delivers his State of the Union address Wednesday night before a joint session of congress. He is expected to address the spending cap during the speech.
KMOX.com will carry the address live beginning at 8 P.M.
