ST. LOUIS (KMOX)  -- The Democratic candidate for U-S Senate in Missouri says the state should consider civil unions.

KMOX tried to find out more about Robin Carnahan's position.  She wasn't available Thursday to explain her response to a question posed at a forum at the University of Missouri.

Her campaign press secretary Linden Zakula says, "Secretary Carnahan says that marriage should be defined as between a man and a woman, but that Missouri should be open to civil unions."

KMOX asked Zakula to clarify.  "I mean her statement speaks for itself.  It's something they should consider and it should be left up to the citizens of Missouri to decide."

Zakula says Carnahan opposes the federal government defining marraige for the state.

KMOX News asked Zakula several times what that position might mean for her campaign, in light of Missouri's 2004 -- voter mandated -- constitutional ban on gay marriage.

KMOX's Megan Lynch: "If it's left up to citizens to decide and they've decided in recent years that they want a ban on gay marriage is this going to be a hard issue for her to overcome in a statewide campaign?"

Zakula: "And I answered that in saying that this election is going to be about getting more jobs, getting the economy back on track, tackling our challenges in health care, tackling our challenges in energy."

Republican Senate Roy Blunt released a statement saying Carnahan's comments reveal her opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act.
