That attempt to kill many of Missouri's affirmative action programs, died a quiet death late Sunday. The group that backed the attempt missed the state deadline to submit its initiative petition. Missouri had been one of five states that California businessman Ward Connerly and his supporters had targeted for an effort to strike down affirmative action laws. Supporters from four other groups angling to get their measures onto the Missouri statewide ballot in November did make the deadline. A group wanting to restrict the use of eminent domain and another wanting to require the use of more renewable energy turned their petitions in within 15 minutes of each other late Sunday. Also, petitions to allow home health care providers to unionize, and to repeal the state's limit on gambling losses and also bar construction of new casinos were submitted prior to the 5.pm deadline in the Missouri Secretary of State's office. Now, office employees will sort through the names to verify their accuracy. . .a process they start this week. Their deadline is August 5th.
