ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson used a special discretionary fund to donate ten thousand dollars to the successful effort to defeat a gay marriage proposal in Maine.
The money comes from private gifts, according to a statement from the Archdiocese, and is placed in a fund for the Archbishop to use at his discretion, but not for formal operations.
It's been used in the past, the Archdiocese says, to help other dioceses around the world fund everything from disaster relief to pro life efforts.
Two other Missouri dioceses also contributed money to the effort -- two thousand dollars from the Jefferson City Diocese and five hundred dollars from the Springfield/Cape Girardeau Diocese.
The Philadelphia and Phoenix Archdioceses both made contributions over 50-thousand dollars.
anyone know how many parishes or schools or hospitals have been closed in this archdiocese? have they paid priest abuse settlements? if so, how much? it would be useful to know the answer to these questions when evaluating the archbishop's use of his "discretion" in this matter.
