KMOX Voice of Caring - May

Rebuilding Together believes that homeownership is an important factor in neighborhood stabilization and preservation. Many elderly and disabled homeowners delay needed repairs on their homes so they can afford to pay for basic expenses, including taxes, health care, food, and clothing. Homeowners are often unable to make their homes more accessible to address age and disability-related limitations. Rebuilding Together seeks to transform homes and neighbor-hoods by bringing people together to make needed repairs for low-income homeowners.

The heart of Rebuilding Together’s programming is our annual Rebuilding Day, a one-day home repair blitz day held on a Saturday in the spring. On Rebuilding Day, over 2,500 volunteers help to repair over 100 homes. Typical home repairs may include: painting, drywall repair or replacement, window and door replacement, replacing deteriorating porches, adding grab bars or other home modifications, updating electrical needs, and repairing outdated plumbing.

Mission Statement:
Rebuilding Together – St. Louis is an affiliate of a national volunteer organization. Our mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners.

Need:
Due to limited resources and, in many cases, physical limitations, homeowners – particularly seniors and people with disabilities – often forgo making critical repairs or modifications that would help them to be safe and secure in their homes. Deferred repairs can lead to a downward spiral of housing problems, emotional stress, and, all too often, life-threatening injuries.

Vision:
Rebuilding Together improves the quality of life of the homeowners we serve by providing free home repairs and improving accessibility within homes. This work of home revitalization encourages economic development and renewal of entire neighborhoods.

Geographic Area:
Since 1993, Rebuilding Together – St. Louis has served low-income homeowners in St. Louis City and County. In April 2007, we extended our reach to homeowners in both St. Charles County and Jefferson County.
