Highland H.S. Grad Dies in Afghanistan

HIGHLAND, Ill. (AP) __ A soldier from the Metro East community of Highland has been killed while serving in Afghanistan. Keely Vasquez says her brother, 33-year-old Army Specialist Gary Vasquez, died Monday. The Department of Defense hasn't released details about his death. Gary Vasquez was a 1992 graduate of Highland High School and got a drama degree from Illinois State University. Vasquez's late father spent his career in the Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Officials have said violence in Afghanistan is up about 30 percent this year compared with 2007. More U.S. soldiers have died in Afghanistan already this year than in any year since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
