Gunfire Scatters Parade-Goers Downtown

A young gunman's in jail after opening fire in the crowd at the Annual Annie Malone May Day Parade downtown Sunday. The parade is one of the year's major events in the African-American community. Sunday, it drew thousands of spectators who lined the streets to honor Annie Malone, a civic leader who helped St. Louis orphans in the early 1900s. Suddenly, several shots were fired into the parade crowd at Tenth and Market. No one was hit but some spectators say they were knocked down and injured as people tried to flee. Police say they've seized the 13-year-old gunman and recovered his weapon. Officers say he'd apparently been arguing with another group of young men. Until a few years ago, the Annie Malone Parade had been held in north St. Louis. After a series of shootings during the parade there, it moved downtown. Sunday's gunfire was the first for the event at its new location. And, on the streets of north St. Louis Sunday afternoon, more gunfire. On Natural Bridge near Newstead, police say a running gunfight between two street gangs led to a 4-year-old girl being shot in the leg. She was riding in a car with her family when they were caught in the cross-fire. Police say they've captured one gunman -- age 19 -- and are looking for more. The shooting victim is recovering at Children's Hospital. Sunday in the city, KMOX monitored at least a dozen reports of shots fired. . .in both north and south St. Louis.
