Another Connection to Tower Grove Park

It's no secret to Total Information AM listeners that I love Tower Grove Park. It's the only park in the area that is a National Historic Landmark (only four parks in the USA have that designation) and hundreds of people work tirelessly to keep its Victorian charm going in a new century. From the playgrounds, to the Victorian shelters, to the walking paths, to the horses, lily ponds and wading pool, Tower Grove Park is a true gem on the southern edge of the Missouri Botanical Gardens (both creations were donated to the city by Henry Shaw himself).
I had the honor last week of being elected to the Friends of Tower Grove Park Board, which oversees Friends of Tower Grove Park-- a 501C3 not-for-profit organization founded in 1988 to support the restoration and enhancement of the Park.
The park has had its share of damage over this past year with strong storms, a tornado and two ice storms wreaking havoc on the park's trees, many of which date back to Henry Shaw himself. Work is underway to replant many trees, but the drought of this summer leaves the future of the little trees a bit murky. Also, thanks to a very generous donation by Emerson, the gorgeous century-old lily ponds are being completely redone. Hopefully by spring, the ponds will look even better than ever, complete with lighting and irrigation for the surrounding grass and plants.
You can become a member of Friends of Tower Grove Park (http://stlouis.missouri.org/parks/tower-grove/Friends_Of_TGP/become_a_member.htm) or, you can make a donation to help purchase new lilies for the pond! Just send your donation to: Lily Pond, c/o Friends of Tower Grove Park, 4256 Magnolia, St. Louis MO 63110-9809. |
